Exploring Eyewear Frame Materials: A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding Options and Considerations
Explore the world of eyewear frame materials with our comprehensive guide. From the affordability of PC to the lightweight strength of titanium, we break down the pros and cons of six main materials. Whether you prioritize flexibility, durability, or style, this guide empowers you to make informed choices for your next pair of glasses.
1. PC material
It is the material once called “space film”, and it is bulletproof glass over 10mm.
Advantages. Lower material prices. Have a certain degree of flexibility. It is impact resistant (this is the reason it is called a space flake), it is cracked but there is no chipping.
Disadvantages. The surface spray paint is not environmentally friendly, and the paint layer is easy to peel off. The comfort is poor, and the durability is not good. The frame cannot be adjusted for different face shapes.
2. TR material
Materials that are currently being used extensively. Excellent flexibility, also known as “memory plastic”.
Advantages: high transparency of the material. Good flexibility. This can meet the needs of different sizes, resistant to squeezing and trampling. It will break because of the addition of recycled materials. The texture is very light.
Disadvantages: The surface painting process is not environmentally friendly. And the paint layer with poor painting technology will peel off quickly (good for about 2 years). Because the elasticity is so good, the frame cannot be adjusted. The softness of the frame also gives the worst lens master the greatest tolerance.

3. Acetate material
Pre-made into plate-shaped (about 5-8mm) raw materials. Then cut into the required frame or mirror shape according to actual needs. Almost all board materials on the market are cellulose acetate material.
Advantages: high surface hardness. No surface treatment, noble texture and wear resistance. The comfort can be adjusted according to different face sizes. It is a mature material that is used in international apparel brand eyewear products.
Disadvantages: The material is hard, and the comfort is poor if the change is not appropriate. Acid materials cannot be matched with PC lenses, which will cause the lenses to crack. Heavier. Will return to flat (because it is cut from a flat plate) needs to be adjusted. And the mirror feet need to be shaped by copper cores.
4. Alloy(Metal) material
There are cupronickel (mainly copper, mainly added nickel, zinc, etc.), manganese nickel (mainly manganese, mainly added nickel, etc.), high nickel (mainly nickel, added chromium, manganese, etc.), nickel copper (based on nickel Mainly, adding copper, etc.). And other alloy materials which have slight differences in physical and chemical properties. Such as strength and corrosion resistance.
Advantages: low material price (especially copper-nickel alloy), low processing difficulty. Easy to adjust the frame.
Disadvantages: poor electroplating adhesion, easy to corrode and rust. Some people are susceptible to metal allergies. Easy to be squeezed and deformed, and heavier.

5. Titanium material
When the purity of titanium reaches more than ninety-nine percent. Titanium metal materials can be regarded as pure titanium glasses. The spectacle frame made of pure titanium material has excellent characteristics. Such as high melting point, light material, strong corrosion resistance, firm electroplating layer. So this ensure the beauty and durability of the spectacle frame. The ideal metal frame material.
Advantages: high strength, not easy to deform. But adjustable frame, not easy to metal allergy. After IP electroplating, the adhesion is high, the durability is high, and the weight is light.
Disadvantages: high material prices and difficult processing, leading to higher prices.
6. β titanium material
It can be understood as another molecular state of titanium. Although the purity of β titanium cannot be compared with pure titanium. Its strength, fatigue resistance and environmental corrosion resistance are more than pure titanium. It is widely used in frames with high elasticity requirements. Such as filament temples, nose chucks, and slender frames.
Advantages: good flexibility, not easy to deform, light weight.
Disadvantages: Not suitable for people with a high number of heights. The front end of the frame is too heavy and easy to slide. And the lens is too thick to affect the appearance and cannot be adjusted. The high price of materials is difficult to process, and the price is relatively high.
